For example, actress Naomi Watts’s brand Stripes and others are leading the charge in championing skincare for menopausal skin. To give you more of an inside scoop on what to keep your eyes peeled for next year when it comes to your complexion, we’ve listed seven of the best skin care trends to keep on your radar for at least another 365 days.
A New Age of At-Home Tech
In 2023, we anticipate seeing even more advancements in beauty tech. Based on our road tests this year of new skincare devices from SolaWave, Therabody, and more, it’s crystal clear that just like our cell phones, our favorite at-home skincare devices (or the ones you never knew you needed) will continue to receive high-powered upgrades.
“I love using LED, because my philosophy is to protect and nourish the lipid barrier,” celebrity aesthetician Angela Caglia tells BAZAAR.com. “There are many invasive treatments available, whether it’s needles or lasers, that work to trick the skin into thinking it’s been wounded to rebuild collagen. But if you use LED, they’re actually healing for the outermost layer of skin, or lipid barrier.” With increased shopper interest around skin clearing and wrinkle-reducing LED along with contour sculpting microcurrent devices, we won’t be surprised if the number of skin tools in your vanity are comparable to your actual products by next year’s end.
The Continued Evolution of Celebrity Skincare
We get it: you’re probably rolling your eyes right now about the idea of yet another celebrity skincare line coming down the pipeline in 2023, but our Spidey-senses (and a few little birdies) are telling us this A-list trend isn’t going anywhere. From Hailey Bieber’s Rhode, and Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset, to Ciara’s OAM (On a Mission), and Kim Kardashain’s SKKN by Kim, it was already difficult to keep track of all the new product drops in 2022—but just wait, we’re betting there’s more.
Menopausal Skin Is In
It’s more common than not to be uninformed about the mental and physical effects that can occur while going through menopause. This year and beyond, skincare brands with offerings dedicated specifically to menopause, including Naomi Watts’s Stripes, are shining a spotlight on the subject.
“Stripes came about because it was very much reflecting my own story of feeling a bit frustrated and alone during this period of time, which was around my early 40s just after I had kids,” Watts tells BAZAAR.com of her own journey with the life stage. “And I had already walked through a period of secrecy and shame surrounding the fertility time, so I was determined not to walk through that secrecy and shame again. In fact, I didn’t even really know how to talk to doctors about it, how to talk to friends about it. And whenever I’d give it a gentle try, I didn’t feel like it was open. So it just kind of struck me, and the fact that it’s left out of compensation and education, it’s just mind-boggling.”
Along with newer brands like Stripes and Womaness that are entirely dedicated to producing essentials for those in menopause, a number of tried-and-true favorites, like Dr. Barbara Sturm and No.7 are increasingly developing skin staples to serve the needs of this demographic.
Niacinamide Reigns Supreme
While we love all skincare ingredients equally, our instincts are telling us niacinamide in particular—also referred to as vitamin B3—is going to be huge. The coveted ingredient is a multitasker, since it helps control sebum production while also being anti-inflammatory. One beauty clue the skincare superstar will launch its cult-status in 2023? Best-selling skin brand Sunday Riley just launched a water-based, 10 percent niacinamide serum to combat redness and uneven skin tone.
The Rise of Dermatologist and Aesthetician Brands
Our team keeps a running list of some of our favorite dermatologist and aesthetician-created skincare brands, which we predict will continue increasing in size. Since we already trust the thoughts and opinions of top beauty experts, it makes perfect sense for professionals who are interested to literally bottle and sell their expertise to their clients. And for good reason: dermatologist Shereene Idriss’s newly released brand PillowtalkDerm Skincare sold out in under 48 hours, and has just recently been restocked. We anticipate beauty lovers will keep that same energy in the new year to come.
Popular ingredients for the face, like retinol and AHAs will continue making their way to our bodies as well, as below-the-neck care continues to advance. We’ve also seen an uptick in body products that treat specific needs and areas, like skin-balancing probiotic hand creams, body serums, and smoothing buffing bars. Prepare your minds (and bodies) for the next wave of skincare, which is already lightyears ahead of the standard shower gel and bar soap.
The Skin Barrier and Microbiome
Your go-to moisturizer may get a formula upgrade in 2023 in favor of more active, skin-strengthening ingredients supporting the skin’s microbiome. “Microbiome has been a buzzword over the last five to 10 years; the gut microbiome probably is most commonly understood thanks to the development of probiotics. But our entire body is an ecosystem, and each person’s individual microbiome is as unique as their fingerprints,” Sam Archer, VP of product marketing and innovation at Nutrafol, explains of the body’s layer of good bacteria.
The over-arching microbiome exists primarily to keep your skin in balance and enhance its barrier, which helps keep external irritants out, lock moisture, and transport nutrients. As studies on both systems are improved, and skincare brands continue to shift their ingredients based on new information, your daily routine will become even more beneficial next year.
