Charlotte author aims to increase children’s literature diversity

“Pricey Small Brown Female” shares a mother’s existence lessons and wisdom and reminds small ladies that they are attractive, sensible, and worthy.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte lady is on a mission to turn into a children’s e book author and add extra variety in children’s literature. 

Jenelle Dunn wrote a reserve referred to as “Dear Very little Brown Girl,” aiming to construct minimal girls’ self-esteem, creativity and spirit.

Dunn explained when she was minimal, she loved to study and describes the library as her 2nd residence, but she quickly noticed a deficiency of range amid the selection of guides.

“When I was expanding up, I failed to seriously see a lot of children’s guides with people that search like me,” Dunn explained.

According to investigate produced from the Cooperative Kid’s E book Heart in 2020, only 12% of kid’s books in the U.S. experienced a key character who was Black, even less for other minority populations.

“We absolutely need to have books that mirror the different globe that we’re in,” Dunn explained. “We have these distinct races. We have these unique styles of individuals, so we should have guides that replicate that.”

This expertise is aspect of the motive why Dunn decided to write “Dear Small Brown Woman.” Dunn explained the book shares a mother’s life classes and knowledge and reminds minimal girls that they are lovely, smart, and worthy.

“I preferred to use that e-book to inspire other small girls, you know, to imagine in them selves and to, you know, consider that they can do just about anything,” Dunn said, “and just to be a positive part model to other very little ladies.”

Dunn is self-publishing and using a Kickstarter marketing campaign to fund pre-orders of the ebook. She is considerably less than $2,000 shy of her target of $6,000 to be in a position to launch the first print run of the ebook.
