Makeup artist reveals four easy steps to master TikTok’s viral ‘cold girl’ beauty trend

Robert Hundley

The latest TikTok beauty trend is taking its inspiration from the wind-burnt cheeks you can get after spending a little too long braving the elements.

The ‘cold girl’ makeup look is centered around the sweeter aspects of the winter chill, with fans striving to look like they just spent time building a snowman or skiing, without actually stepping foot outside.

Makeup artist Zoe Kim Kenealy created the simple, yet glowing makeup look that quickly went viral after she shared how to achieve it, which involves blush, highlighter and lip gloss – with earmuffs optional.

Without even hopping on a plane to the Alps, you can get the ‘cold girl’ makeup look by beginning with a base of any foundation, CC cream or tinted moisturizer.

After applying your favorite base, you will apply blush pretty much everywhere – your cheeks, nose, around your lips and your chin to get that wintery glow.

Add a shimmery highlighter to the corner of your eye and on your cheekbones, before finishing the look off with a glossy or matte lipstick.

In an interview with Byrdie, the creator revealed how to achieve the look.

Get that winter glow without the chill! How to achieve the viral ‘cold girl’ makeup

Step one: Keep it matte

Apply a matte base, like a foundation, CC cream or tinted moisturizer

Step two: Pack on the blush

Apply a pink or orange shade of blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend it into your under-eye area

Add blush to your nose, around your lips and to your chin

Step three: Get that glow

Apply a shimmery highlighter to your cheekbones, the corner of your eye, the tip of your nose and your eyelids

Step four: Don’t forget the lipstick

Add a swipe of pink to your lips and top it off with a gloss to finish off the look

‘I would avoid blush shades that are too vibrant or pink. Otherwise, you will look more like you packed a lot of blush on and not necessarily cold,’ she said.

She went on to recommend the Benefit Cosmetics Wanderful World Silky Soft Blush in Butterfly Orange and Shellie Pink.

Zoe revealed she was inspired to dream up the makeup trend because she had always loved the flushed-cheek look.

‘Every photo of a girl in cold weather with rosy cheeks gave me all the feels, so I thought I would make a TikTok attempting to create the look,’ Zoe told Byrdie.

She added that she wanted to romanticize the winter months with the look that was inspired by the holidays.

‘For one, the look is timely and accessible, making it perfect for beginners,’ she added.

And for the content creator and artist, it’s much more than just a trend, it’s a shared love.

‘I think one of the reasons we love TikTok so much is because it makes us realize we are all sharing so many human experiences we might have thought of as personal before,’ she said.

‘The cold girl makeup look is one of those moments.’

The hashtag ‘coldgirlmakeup’ has amassed more than 76.1 million views, with hundreds of users gushing over the look that’s not only easy to execute, but leaves you feeling and looking like a frosted winter wonderland.

Makeup artist Mikayla Nogueira shared herself attempting the cold girl makeup trend and paired the look with dramatic lashes, and even opted for a touch of bronzer since she’s ‘naturally pale.’

Olivia Ancell also jumped on the trend, creating a stunning frosty-look complete with a beanie.

Sarra Cherif and beauty enthusiast Raquel shared their own recreations of the trend that saw them sporting perfect doses of blush.

According to makeup expert and content creator Reagan Baylee, from California, the trend became viral because it not only leaves you with a gorgeous face of makeup, but is also ‘attainable.’

What products will help you master the makeup trend, according to a makeup expert

  • Hydrate before applying your favorite CC cream, foundation or tinted moisturizer with the First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream ($38).
  • Pack on the blush with the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush ($20) or Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand ($40).
  • To get that glow, the beauty expert recommends the Colourpop Super Shock Shadow ($7) or IT Cosmetics Superhero No Tug Eyeshadow Stick ($24).
  • And for mascara she recommends, the Tower28 MakeWaves Lengthening and Volumizing Mascara ($20).
  • For lipstick, Reagan suggests the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb ($20) or Kopari Tri-Peptide Lip Cloud ($24).

‘The beauty industry is fast paced. Thanks to TikTok, we see new trends on a weekly basis. It’s hard to keep up! This trend is attainable because you most likely already own everything you need to complete the “cold girl” look,’ Reagan told DailyMail.com.

‘I think beauty lovers are craving more natural looks following the peak of “full glam” makeup trend featuring heavy liner, lashes, overlined lips and dramatic eyeshadow. The “cold girl” makeup look is wearable, easy to achieve and looks good on everyone!’

She added that the trend perfectly combines the ‘winter chill’ and a ‘heavy dose of blush.’

‘Think of it as the Apres-Ski look without the ski – convenient, right?’

Reagan also told Good Morning America: ‘Less is more when it comes to the cold girl makeup. Add a pop of silver to the inner corner of your eye, a swipe of highlighter for an inner glow and glassy lip, and you’ve transformed into a snow bunny ready for your next winter adventure.’

Reagan recommends starting with a hydrating repair cream, especially because winter months can leave your skin feeling dry.

‘A good makeup look starts with happy skin! Hydration is key during winter and I can’t recommend First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream ($38) enough. Pro tip: you can use it head to toe!’ she said.

Reagan added that the real star of the show was the blush, so don’t be afraid to go in with a heavy hand.

‘If you’re a blush lover, this look is right up your alley! My personal favorites (including the majority of beauty lovers) are the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush ($20) and Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand ($40),’ she explained.

To get that glow, the beauty expert recommends the Colourpop Super Shock Shadow ($7) or IT Cosmetics Superhero No Tug Eyeshadow Stick ($24).

‘Your lashes have a moment to shine with this simple eye look – consider one of my favorite natural mascaras – the Tower28 MakeWaves Lengthening and Volumizing Mascara ($20),’ she said before sharing her favorite lip shades.

For lipstick, Reagan suggests the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb ($20) or Kopari Tri-Peptide Lip Cloud ($24).
