Charlize went through hell and back to land a role in the 1997 horror film ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ after director Taylor Hackford told her she was too good looking to play the gritty role of Mary Ann Lomax. She said: “I had to stop wearing makeup, wake up at six in the morning, beat myself up, not brush my hair, not put any concealer under my eyes, and went in to read with dark circles under my eyes. I had to go through hell to make them believe the devil could be in me.”

She said: “Joe Wright didn’t want me for ‘Pride and Prejudice’ because he thought I was too pretty. “I never even think about beauty. “Supposedly being pretty is a double-edged sword: your look gets you certain roles, but disqualifies you from others. That’s the way the industry goes.”

Halle – who came sixth in Miss World in 1986 – said: “Just because someone looks a certain way doesn’t mean that they are spared adversity. “Adversity does not discriminate. “I came from the world of beauty pageants and modeling and right away when people heard that I got discounted as an actor. “I took on roles early on that really didn’t rely on my physical self at all and that was a good way to sort of get some credibility within my industry. “Spike Lee wanted me to read for the part of his wife and I read that part fine enough, but then I said to Spike, ‘You know I really am eyeing this other role, can you please let me audition for that?’ And he said, ‘No, no I don’t see you as that…'”

Beyonce almost lost out on her role as Deena Jones in the critically acclaimed movie ‘Dreamgirls’ because her on her overtly sexual stage persona. Director Bill Condon said: “Beyonce did come after us, it wasn’t the other way round. “I loved her but… I wondered whether she could adapt to something that was so different. If you think of the way she is sexually on a stage. She is so powerful and contemporary, and this was about something very different. It was about withholding.”

Executive producer Marshall Herskovitz said: “Alicia is so beautiful that that would have affected her experience of the world. “People would have been telling her she was beautiful since she was six years old. You can’t put that face in what’s been written for this girl.” The part of Liberty High School student Angela Chase eventually went to Clair Danes.

She said: “I pulled out of the Linda Lovelace biopic. I decided that it should go to someone who is not already sexualized by the public – Linda Lovelace was an innocent.
